Ruhr University Bochum

With around 42,000 students (at the beginning of 2017), the Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany. The Ruhr-Uni is a university with many degree programmes: you can study humanities as well as engineering and natural sciences at Bochum University. It has been talked about as an elite university in recent years.

Opinions are very divided about the architecture of the university. The large central building (see picture above) Audimax is supposed to be reminiscent of a shell. The many large high-rise buildings of the Ruhr University are supposed to symbolise ships. The entire university is thus supposed to represent a harbour of knowledge, although this could at most be seen from the air. All the buildings are typical concrete buildings from the 1960s and 1970s.

If you walk straight ahead from the underground, you first come to the Audimax via a large central square. The large and good refectory is behind it. The individual faculties to the left and right of this main path are signposted and marked with different colours (see picture below right). Everything seems very functional and sober, but has a certain charm.
