Friedrichshafen

Friedrichshafen is the second largest city on Lake Constance after Konstanz (about 60,000 inhabitants). In contrast to LindauLindau, Constance or even Meersburg, Friedrichshafen has surprisingly few tourists. The city’s inhabitants tend to live from industry. The price level in Friedrichshafen is relatively low. If you are looking for a cheap room on Lake Constance, Friedrichshafen is the best place to find one.

During the day, ferries depart hourly from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn in Switzerland (large car ferries) and to Kontanz. If you are travelling by car, however, it is better to take the ferry from Meersburg to Konstanz.

There are two important railway stations in Friedrichshafen , the city station and the harbour station. However, they are only about 800 metres apart. Between the two stations is the city centre of Friedrichshafen with a large pedestrian zone. Public outdoor swimming pools on Lake Constance can be found to the west of the city centre.

Friedrichshafen has a medium-sized airport, which is extremely important for the entire North Lake Constance region.

The history of Friedrichshafen’s economy in the 20th century was shaped by the construction of airships (zeppelins). So it’s no wonder that among the biggest attractions in Friedrichshafen are zeppelin sightseeing flights and the Zeppelin Museum (right at the central harbour).
