Posted by The Museum für Mineralien is a smaller museum in Kupferdreh, a suburb of the city of Essen in the southern Ruhr area. The museum is only a few minutes’ walk from the Kupferdreh S-Bahn station and is therefore easy to reach by public transport. In addition to the geological collection, there are other exhibitions on topics such as “Sound of the Stones”, or “Mammoth, Man and Flintstone”.
Admission to the museum is free. The geology museum is in an old school in Essen-Kupferdreh, which is a listed building. A circular route leads through the small museum. First you come to see exhibits from the Stone Age and even older times. It is about mammoths, dinosaurs and the art of making fire in the Stone Age.
Then you reach the actual mineral exhibition. In one room you can see huge gemstones, quartz crystals and the like. Of course, the various forms of hard coal and brown coal are also on display in a mineral museum in the Ruhr region.

We liked the exhibition on the theme of “The Sound of Stones”. Several rooms are dedicated to stone musical instruments and other stones that make interesting sounds.
Admission Mineral Museum Essen-Kupferdreh 2024: Admission is free. There is a free toilet for museum visitors. The staff was nice and helpful during our visit. The museum is run by the large Ruhr Museum in the former Zollverein colliery.
Opening hours Mineral Museum Essen 2024: The small museum in the Kupferdreh district is open every day except Monday from 10 am to 6 pm. On public holidays, too, the opening hours are usually as above.
How to get to the Museum für Mineralien in Essen-Kupferdreh: You can take the S-Bahn from Essen to Kupferdreh in about a quarter of an hour. During the week, the S-Bahn line 9 runs every 20 minutes during the day. Line S9 runs from Wuppertal via Kupferdreh and Essen Hbf to Bottrop. So you can also get to the Mineralienmuseum from Bottrop and Wuppertal without changing trains. There are also buses to Kupferdreh, e.g. line 155 from Essen town hall (city centre, pedestrian zone). The museum is in the centre of Kupferdreh, many shops and restaurants are nearby. It is about a 5-minute walk from Kupferdreh railway station to the Mineral Museum.
