Lindau

For me, Lindau is the most beautiful town on the German shore of Lake Constance, next to Meersburg. The special thing about Lindau is the location of the city centre on an island in Lake Constance. You can walk around the island in about an hour. The island of Lindau is connected to the mainland by a railway embankment and a motorway bridge. There are plenty of parking spaces for which a fee is charged. Incidentally, Lindau is the only town on Lake Constance that belongs to the federal state of Bavaria.

Highlights of Lindau are the harbour and the old town. The promenade around the harbour is the town’s promenade. Here are also the chic and expensive hotels, such as the famous Bayerischer Hof, cafes and restaurants. The harbour exit with the lighthouse and the stone lion is very famous. As the Bavarian heraldic animal, the lion symbolises Lindau’s affiliation with Bavaria. A stroll through Lindau’s old town is well worthwhile. Highlights for many visitors are the Old Town Hall and St Peter’s Church.

How to get to Lindau: The best way to get there by car is to cross the bridge, keep to the right and use the pay and display car park. The car park is not too expensive for a day trip. Trains also go to the island. Lindau’s main railway station is only a few hundred metres from the harbour and the old town.
